Cultural History

The Yankton Sioux Tribe, popularly known as "Ihanktonwan Dakota Oyate" or "People of the End Village", has a property along the Missouri River Bottom. The location of their Tribal Headquarters is at Marty which is a home to the Marty India School.  

They are presently maintaining a bison heard that travels near the Treaty of 1858 Monument north of Greenwood. That monument traces the spot where the signing of the designating land for the Dakota Sioux occurred. 

Struck By The Ree's grave is just north of the treaty monument. The legend behind Struck By The Ree started in the days of Lewis and Clark. They say in the story that it was Meriwether Lewis who took a Yankton Baby. He wrapped it in an American Flag and vowed that the child will be a friend of white men. The baby grew up and became the Struck By the Ree which is a highly honored Yankton Chief. His gravesite commemorates his great leadership. 

The Yankton Sioux Tribe provides place of recreation today. A Missouri River reservoir called Lake Francis Case is a very inviting place for people who love swimming, camping, fishing and other outdoor activities. The place is very relaxing that many people are attracted to go there. On the other hand, you can go around at the large earthen dam that creates Lake Francis Case. That dam is called Fort Randall Dam. 

On the north of Pickstown, you can find the Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge. There is a wildlife and waterfowl in their own habitat that can be observed there. The most commonly seen species there are gulls, pelicans, herons and Grebes. The grasslands surrounding the lake are inhabited by the White-tailed deer and ring-necked pheasants.

Indigenous who are members of the blues band are members of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. The group includes two brothers (Mato and Pte), a sister (Wanbdi) and a cousin (Horse). They have shared stages with B. B. King, Melissa Etheridge and Big Head Todd and the Monsters.

At Fort Randal Casino near Wagner, Hotel and Restaurant, visitors can have fun as well as play games. Slot machines, poker etc. are offered in their Casino. Here, people can spend their vacation and enjoy their stay in the place.
