The Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas are a member of a three-tiered group of Indians that have been dispersed across the nation. From the beginning of their history, the Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas have been well-known for combining with other tribes, splitting into smaller tribes, and moving across the nation. Their history is chock-full of changes, but the tradition throughout has remained focused. Before the tribe came to be joined, there were originally two different tribes; the Sauk and the Foxes. Thanks to the help of the French, however, the two formed a cooperation in the eighteenth century. A raid on the Foxes forced this move, as the two tribes felt they would be better equipped to face the growing threat of outsiders together instead of individually. This union has remained intact to this day, with neither tribe seeing a reason to break it. The Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas are one existing member of this original tribe formed hundreds of years ago. As one may expect, they were originally located in the state of Missouri. Due to encouragement from the government, however, they were forced to move into the state of Kansas not soon after their emergence. This move was not one that the tribe wanted to make, and to this day they still refer to themselves as from Missouri, even though it is likely that new generations of the tribe have lived in Kansas their entire lives. The Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas were also one of the first recognized tribes in the country. In the mid-1930s, the tribe joined the national tribe registration. They were given a reservation in Kansas by the government, but the tribe lost a good chunk of this land later due to immense pressure to sign it off. This allotment has dwindled since first being offered until the present-day. Much like many other tribes across the nation, the Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas eventually decided to use the gambling world to make an income. Their casino, aptly named the Sac and Fox Casino, has been a source of great economic growth for the tribe. Over the years the Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas has been a great source for famous Native Americans. Jim Thorpe, a world-famous athlete, was a Sac and Fox tribal member from Oklahoma, while the great chief Black Hawk was a member of the tribe before they were divided. The Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas are just one part of a greater group, but their individual history cannot be ignored. They are a proud tribe that has worked hard to establish themselves as an important part of the nation and of the Native American society as a whole.
